SlideshowIntel Gathers Electronics Cluster In Rio RanchoIn May 2001, Site Selection Magazine noted that what Wal-Mart is to Bentonville, Arkansas, Intel is to Rio Rancho. Since 1980 when Intel chose the barely nascent suburb of Albuquerque for its semiconductor wafer manufacturing facility, both Intel and Rio Rancho have matured beyond even the most knowledgable forecaster’s predictions: Intel built a second fab, completed in 2002, and now employs 5600 people, and Rio Rancho has a grown an impressive cluster of software, semiconductor, and machining companies built around the goliath-on-the-mesa, but which are strong businesses in their own right. In addition to its annual $1 billion economic contribution to the state’s economy, Intel has attracted a large electronics workforce—in 2004 the company's payroll equaled $304 million. Rio Rancho Economic Development Corporation notes that 3,200 contractors service Intel in Rio Rancho. It is the largest private industrial employer in New Mexico, and its presence in Rio Rancho has transformed the town into the fastest growing in the state.
